Repair Your Credit Tips

Tips for Repairing Your Credit

Learn How You Can Improve Your Credit Score

At Ron Marhofer Credit Solutions, we don't judge or dismiss customers who have poor or bad credit histories. We understand that bad things happen to good people, and sometimes events pile up in a way that requires you to juggle your bills. To us, unlike many other auto dealers in the Akron area, the important thing is that you're ready to take the steps needed to repair past damage.

We believe that everyone should be able to purchase their next vehicle, regardless of their credit history. That's why we specialize in bad credit financing, with an experienced team that's ready to get to work on finding a loan that's well-suited to your situation. We've proven ourselves able to help drivers from the Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson OH, and New Franklin OH finance their next car, so we're ready to help you take ownership of the high-quality pre-owned sedan, SUV, or pickup that you need and want. While you're browsing our inventory of well-maintained vehicles, consider these handy tips for improving your credit the right -- and long-lasting -- way.

Examine Your Credit Report

The first thing you want to do is see what's on your credit report, in case there are any errors. This is also a good way of seeing why your score is low, and learning what mistakes not to repeat. You're entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the credit bureaus, so don't hesitate to ask for yours.

Pay Your Bills on Time

This may seem elementary, but it's surprising how easy it is to overlook a due date. Your payment history makes up more than a third of your credit score, so it's a good idea to either set up due date alerts or try to arrange for your due dates to coincide better with your paycheck schedule.

Have a Variety of Credit Types

If most of your credit report consists of credit cards (or revolving lines of credit), this can hurt your score. The balance of debt type accounts for around ten percent of your credit score, so adding an auto loan or mortgage (installment credit) will improve how the bureaus view your score. This is another way we help many of our friends and neighbors, since we make sure to report your loan to the credit bureaus.

Pay Down Any Credit Card Debt

Outstanding credit card debt accounts for about 30 percent of your score, so the more you owe, the lower your score will be. While tough times may have required you to max out your limits on your cards, those high balances are hurting you now that you're back on your feet again. If you can get your balances to below 30 percent of your credit limit, and keep them below that threshold, you'll find that your credit score will improve dramatically month after month. Keep in mind that the bureaus receive notice of your balance at the time of your monthly statement, so try not to use too much of your available credit even if you do pay your card off every month.

Limit the Amount of Credit You Apply For

It's never a good idea to apply for credit from a number of sources in a short period of time, since every application results in your credit report being accessed and analyzed. Each new inquiry can have a negative impact on your credit score, so applying for a bunch of new credit in a short period of time can do great harm.
